Library & Archive | The Sir Arthur Sullivan Society

The Society Library has in the main been assembled in two ways: gifts or bequests from individual members, and performance material which the Society has commissioned for specific recordings or concerts. The collection forms a unique archive of performing material, most of it unavailable from any other public or private library or collection.

The following items are available and may be hired. A deposit is required, which is refundable upon the safe return of all hired material. Please contact the Librarian with details of your requirements and performance date/s, to obtain a quote.

In addition to the items listed, the Library holds single copies of vocal scores, libretti, and most of Sullivan’s songs, hymns and other music, including various arrangements, and incomplete orchestral sets of Lancers, Selections etc. Please contact the Librarian if you are looking for something that is not listed for hire, as copies can usually be provided from the archive for a small charge.

The Library also holds a collection of early prompt books, original performance material and copyists’ scores. Most of this material can be made available for research purposes, but is generally in a fragile condition, and may only be viewed under controlled circumstances.
